FREE SPIRITS: Tibet in exile - 1992 to 1999 In 1959 the Fourteenth Dalai Lama of Tibet escaped from his Chinese occupied homeland to India, inspiring 120,000 of his countrymen to follow him. Working hard to rebuild their lives and preserve their distinctive and timeless culture and lifestyle, these people, from difficult beginnings, have become arguably the most successful refugee community in the world. These photographs are a glimpse of Tibet in exile; a culture recreated in India and Nepal; a record of the resilience, humour and above all the strength of faith of the Tibetan people gathered around the charismatic and remarkable figure of the Fourteenth Dalai Lama. |

DROKPA: People of the Solitudes - 2000 to the present An intimate look at the spirit and simplicity of the nomad people of Amdo and Kham, the wild eastern borderlands of old Tibet. A celebration of their unique self sufficient lifestyle, lived in harmony with nature and the spirit – one that has given them great freedom and independence and that has barely changed for centuries. This is an evocation of a way of life under threat – although the nomads have been the Tibetans least affected by Chinese rule since the 1950s there are now strong moves to settle and control them and to fence their grassland ranges, their fate potentially echoing that of the native American Indians. |
